There are two ways to attend Build Peace 2020: as a participant or as a contributor. Check the options below! The conference will take place on November 6 – 8, 2020 at Philippi Village (Cape Town, South Africa) and online.

COVID-19 Note: We are monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic to determine whether it will be possible to hold a physical gathering in November 2020 in Cape Town and any travel restrictions.

Acknowledging the uncertainty, we have designed Build Peace 2020 as both a physical gathering and an online gathering, run in parallel on November 6 – 8, 2020.

To allow that flexibility, all plenary sessions will be livestreamed and recorded; all workshops and break-out sessions will have online versions that will allow participation; all fair stands will have a virtual space for exhibition and asynchronous interaction on the online conference platform. We will provide updates on the physical gathering as we get closer to November, to allow participants wishing to attend in person to make travel arrangements.

Register as a participant

Every year, between 150 and 350 people attend Build Peace as participants. Participants bring their experience to conference sessions, sharing it in questions, discussions and networking. Participants can also suggest impromptu sessions during the “Unconference” on the last day.

For all participants, the ticket will give you access to the online platform where plenary sessions will be livestreamed and online versions of break out sessions will take place.

For participants wishing to attend in person, the ticket will give you access to all conference events taking place in Cape Town. Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to Cape Town.

Conference tickets are donation based

We ask you to consider your economic possibilities, and decide on a price that you are willing to pay. In previous years, we’ve charged between US$100 and US$350 for full conference tickets, but we understand that this year is different – that’s why we leave it to you to donate if you can. All ticket sales go towards covering the costs of running the conference.

Apply to Contribute

We value the experience and expertise beyond our immediate network. Every year, we make a public call for applications to deliver short talks, organize workshops and exhibit at a fair.

Workshop organizers and short talk speakers receive free conference tickets and (to the extent possible) support with their travel and accommodation. Fair stand holders will need to purchase a conference ticket. Before applying to contribute, please review the conference program to ensure your contribution speaks to the Build Peace 2020 themes.

The application deadline is July 31 for all contributions.

Workshops at Build Peace are breakout sessions that offer a deep dive into an area of practice or research that is relevant to the conference topic. We will try to accommodate as many relevant workshops as we can. All workshops must be designed in a way that allows for both online and in person participation.

Short talks at Build Peace are 10-minute presentations to the conference plenary about an ongoing or finished project. Every year, we receive about 100 applications for 15 spots. All short talks will be livestreamed, and speakers can select to speak in person at the conference venue or remotely via video call.

The Fair at Build Peace is a physical and virtual open space where organizations and individuals can showcase art, products, tools or projects that are relevant to the conference theme. The physical fair stands will be in an outdoor space where lunch will also be served. The virtual fair will be a space for exhibition and asynchronous interaction on the online conference platform.
